On this episode of the podcast, I am joined by Or Shahar, who is joining me all the way from Germany. Or shares how she came to yoga from a place of depression and found that yoga was very healing for her. She decided to take her first teacher training in India, and then proceeded to take another training in Germany.
Or shares how her teaching journey led her to teaching and living in Berlin, Germany and what the yoga landscape is like in Germany. She also shares how she has taught yoga to individuals with special needs and how she has expanded her business online through trainings and videos. We discuss the importance of being patient with yourself and your business, stepping outside of the traditional idea of what a yogi and a yoga class should look like, saying “yes” to as many opportunities as you can when you’re a new yoga teacher, and so much more!
Enjoy!
What we talk about on this episode:
- Having a strong practice before beginning to teach
- Teaching individuals with special needs and offering yoga to people with different needs than you have
- Let go of the image of what a yogi should look like and what a yoga class should look like
- Be patient!
- Just start even if you don’t know what you’re doing – you’ll figure it out as you go!
- Quality over quantity
- Know that your first blog post or product won’t be your best and that you’ll get better with time, but that you have to start somewhere
- Social media as a business owner is more complicated and much more work than we often think it will be
- When it comes to your social media account come back to quality over quantity!
- Creating online offerings
- Find a good camera person
- Come back to your unique offering, and outsource what you don’t do well
- Outsource the things that weigh on you a lot, that you don’t enjoy and that you don’t do well
- Moving into full-time yoga teaching is a process – take it slowly
- If you teach part-time, you need to keep strict boundaries, and make sure that you have a break for yourself!
- Start small, and build up your teaching schedule. Allow it to grow organically.
- Say “yes” a lot in the beginning!
- After a few years of saying “yes”, you can become more picky with what you say “yes” to
- Make sure that you keep your own practice once you are teaching regularly
