Carolyn McPherson has a sense of adventure unlike anyone I’ve ever met before. She has lived and worked around the world, and after completing her YTT in India, she set out to teach yoga abroad.
One of the coolest parts about Carolyn being a yoga teacher is that she is Canadian, but she has never officially taught yoga in Canada.
Carolyn began her career teaching yoga abroad at an eco resort in Nicaragua. She exchanged room and board for a daily yoga class. After teaching over 100 yoga classes in a row, she knew that she needed to change things up, and she set off for the Dominican Republic. Carolyn learned Spanish and began teaching yoga in both English and Spanish. She taught yoga full-time in the Dominican Republic, and even taught a class on the rooftop of her apartment.
Carolyn was happy in the Dominican Republic and had no plans of leaving until she received a message from the owner of the ashram where she completed her teacher training, asking her to return to work for them.
“I thought it was a joke or spam,” she told me. “But once I asked more, I knew I had to go. I thought about it for like a day, but really, I knew I was going within a few hours.”
Carolyn packed up her life in the Dominican Republic, booked a flight back to Canada to organize a visa for India, and then set off on her adventure to India.
Currently, Carolyn lives and works at the AyurYoga Eco-Ashram near Mysore, India. She came on the podcast to tell me about her experience teaching yoga abroad, how she did it, what life is like in India, and so much more.
