This week on the podcast I am joined by Chioma (Chi) Njoku from The Mindful Bookkeeper. Chi is a business woman turned yoga teacher. After 6 months of teaching yoga full-time, Chi found that she couldn’t create a sustainable living just off of her studio classes. She was frustrated and disheartened by the yoga industry.
Then, after hearing too much “You can’t make money in the yoga industry” and “I’ll just do it for free”, Chi decided to start her own business – The Mindful Bookkeeper – to help people begin to understand the power of money stories, relationships with money, and that it’s okay to make money in your business!
On this episode, we talk about the money side of the yoga industry, why it’s okay to make money as a yoga teacher, how to overcome your money stories, and much more.
Enjoy!
Business Lessons from this Episode:
- Don’t allow anyone to tell you when you’re ready to do a teacher training program
- Do thorough research when it comes to picking a yoga teacher training program
- Scarcity mindset can be detrimental to our yoga teaching and yoga businesses
- We are just doing what other people are doing, and we need to make a shift since it’s not working to teach 25 classes a week all over a city for $15 a class
- It’s not greedy to want to be paid for your services as a yoga teacher – you can be of service while still getting paid
- “Business” isn’t a bad word, and “money” is not a bad word
- We need to stop saying “I will do this for free!”
- We need to be excited about our teaching for the teaching not to die out
- The world can actually use more yoga teachers, so we should be more collaborative and less competitive
- Saying something like “there’s no money in yoga” or “I can’t make money in yoga” sets your beliefs in a way that you don’t feel that you can or are worthy to make money
- Discounting is massive in the yoga industry and is something that we should limit – we don’t need to discount our products and services if we’re asking what we believe they are worth
- People value things more when they pay for them
- Be aware of your approach to money and be honest with yourself about your money beliefs
- Look at your childhood and how your parents spoke about and taught you about money to figure out what your money stories are
- Be good to yourself so that you can be good to other people
- And much more… Here’s the episode!
