This week on the podcast I am joined on the podcast by Tara Newbigging from Canmore, Alberta. She is the founder of BooTy and Studio B and you may remember Tara from all the way back in season 1. I had the pleasure of chatting with Tara as one of my very first episodes that I did for M.B.Om, and on that episode, we talked all about how she stepped outside of the box to create her own fitness brand, BooTy. Since then, Tara has trained BooTy leaders around the world, as well as opened a home studio in Canmore called Studio B.
On this episode, Tara and I talk about what it was like to grow her brand and her business, train other teachers around the globe, and what it’s been like to open a yoga & fitness studio in a small town. Tara talks about business lessons and what she’s learned through the process of growing her business, and much more.
Enjoy!
Business Lessons in this Episode:
-
Sometimes succeeding can lead you to places where you feel unsatisfied. For Tara, working on the back end of her business was very valuable, but as she spent less time teaching she realized she missed it and decided to open a studio space where she could be more hands-on with teaching.
-
To grow to new levels in your business you need to learn to trust others to help or support with your work. That might mean going from teaching students to teaching teachers or just taking on admin help. No matter the capacity you’ll need to trust and support others to take your business to the next level.
-
When thinking about if it makes sense to start your own studio, instead of teaching in others, it’s important to have a regular clientele at your classes and think about how your offerings will be different. But no matter how much you prep, there will always be unknowns, and if you’re excited about it, you’ll likely have to make the jump into the unknown.
-
Expenses can be higher than you expect when you’re starting your own studio space or business in general. Doing research and talking about the nitty-gritty details can help avoid unpleasant surprises when your first bills come through.
-
As you grow your business, your workload grows with it. Taking time for your personal life is easy to sacrifice, but is important to maintain to make your life sustainable. Find a way to structure your life, whether with weekends off or scheduled time to do the things you love.
-
Your life will never be perfectly balanced. When you have a business, social life, family, hobbies, and all sorts of other stuff going on, there will always be one thing that takes more of your attention. To be successful and happy while growing your business, career, or personal practice you can accept that your life can be temporarily out of balance. Adding balance to your life is a journey, not a destination you’re aiming to reach.
-
As a new studio owner patience is the key. You set up great classes, you do outreach, you talk to people in the community and trust that if you have great offerings word will spread.
-
When you’re just starting your business it can be tempting to give out a lot of free trials, but that can lead to people undervaluing your business. They can be helping in a limited way to get people the door after that focusing on the people who are willing to pay and serving them is the way to grow.
- And much more… Here’s the episode!
