This week on the podcast I am joined by Kremena Yordanova from YorYoga. Kremena is originally from Bulgaria but joined me from the Netherlands. Kremena took her first yoga class when she moved to the Netherlands in 2006, and she soon realized that with a regular practice, yoga could be life-changing. She began teaching yoga in 2008 and has been teaching ever since. Now, she teaches weekly yoga classes, special workshops, events and retreats.
On this episode, we talk about how Kremena built her yoga business in The Hague, how to find your authentic voice as a yoga teacher, how to create meaningful relationships on and off the mat, the business lessons she’s learned throughout her career and much more.
Enjoy!

Business Lessons From This Episode:

  • When you’re starting out and learning to express yourself as a yoga teacher, it is important to consider the students you are teaching and the spaces that you are teaching in. At the beginning take all the opportunities you can to teach, but start  thinking about the studios that you want to practice at, that you would pay to practice at, and target those as places to try and win teaching opportunities.
  • When you’re working a job and teaching outside of that it is hard to focus on the idea of building your career and building as a business. If you stay focus on helping students and building connections with people, than in many was bringing in revenue will follow from that.
  • People in general have a tendency to overthink things when they are writing out the marketing copy for things they are offering. Kremena focus’ on writing in a way that is very similar to what she would say if she were talking to her regular students. It is also important to remember that you aren’t imposing on people by sharing your offerings, you are giving people an opportunity to find something that could be valuable to them.
  • Lot’s of teachers are interested in hosting retreats, but struggle with all the decisions that go into planning them. When thinking about where to host a retreat, focus first on a place that you want to go. Don’t go somewhere because it will be best for your margins, or because it is popular. When you choose a place that you want to go that excitement shines through.
  • Flight tickets are often a reason that potential students won’t go to a retreat, so making sure there are affordable flights, and then providing estimated flight costs, and the way to find cheaper flights is very helpful for getting people to say yes.
  • Building community is an important part to succeeding as a yoga teacher. Build relationships with your students, and help students connect with other students. Investing in your community makes yoga even more meaningful and helps create opportunities in the future.
  • Be patient when your building your career. Opportunities have a tendency to work when the timing is right. If you feel like your are forcing and forcing something, and it isn’t happening the way you want it to, it is usually best to step away and wait for the timing to be better.
  • When you’re starting out, find your story and what makes you unique as a yoga teacher. Share more about who you are and why you care about yoga, because that helps students connect with you.
  • And much more… Here’s the episode!
