Kelly Smith on Building a Location Independent Yoga Business & Finding Your Authentic Voice

This week on the podcast I am re-joined on the podcast by Kelly Smith from Yoga for You Online! Kelly joined me on the podcast back in January 2018 where we talked about creating a yoga experience and leading guided meditations!

This time she is back to talk about how she has shifted her business over the last 2 years to a more location independent business, and tips for other yoga teachers who are interested in taking their businesses online. We also talk a lot about finding your authentic voice as a teacher, getting over imposter syndrome, finding your own way to guide your students into poses, business lessons Kelly has learned in her business, and much more!

Enjoy!

Discussed in this episode:
  • Fake it until you make it!
  • Always look at your business and see what is serving you and what isn’t and make changes from there
  • Pull down on what’s not working and double down on what is working!
  • Figure out what problem you can solve for your clients / students and then put yourself out there
  • Hearing “no” is a normal part of building a business, especially a yoga business
  • If you aren’t getting a return on your investment after some time of trying it, let it go!
  • Not every teacher is for every student! There will be people who don’t love your classes, and that’s okay
  • When you are finding your voice, don’t try to be like other people – just be yourself!
  • Think about how a pose feels in your body when you are in it, and then say that
  • You have to go through a period of time of feeling uncomfortable because you’re learning a new skill
  • When you’re a new yoga teacher, it’s awkward to identify as a yoga teacher, but start telling people that you teach yoga AND that you want to teach. It gets less weird the more you do it!
  • Get comfortable talking about yourself and what you do
  • The key to getting over imposter syndrome is to fully step into who you are. You can be an imposter of yourself!
  • If you have the knowledge and the passion to share something, then you should go for it! There’s always going to be a reason to not
  • Step out of permission mindset and into your own power
  • When you’re building your business, start with free resources and then get a coach and work with someone 1-on-1
  • Reflect on who you are, what you stand for, what do you have to say and how would you like to say it
  • Once you know who your people are and who you serve, find out who they are! Where do they hang out? How can you find them?
  • You need to give people a solution to a problem before they even realize that they have a problem!
  • Failure is inevitable, but you just need to pick yourself back up, learn from your experiences and try again!
  • And much more… Here’s the episode!

I am very excited to announce a brand new partnership with Ana Luisa! Ana Luisa is a quality jewelry brand that uses recycled gold to make their products. As a yoga teacher with a new business, I haven’t splurged on myself in years. I always end up buying cheap jewelry that doesn’t last, and that’s why I am so happy that I discovered Ana Luisa! They make pieces for everyday wear and beautiful pieces for all your events. The best part is that they are offering YOU a discount. Head on over to analuisa.com/mbom and treat yourself (because you’re worth it!).
