A Conversation on Hands on Assists with Shannon Crow

This week on the podcast, I am joined by Shannon Crow from The Connected Yoga Teacher for a conversation on hands on assists. This conversation spurred from a prompt in my private Facebook community, Yoga Business Badasses, around the topic of doing adjustments or assists in class. Shannon commented and we decided to turn conversation into a podcast episode for everyone to enjoy!

In this episode, we discusses our thoughts and opinions on hands on assists, how to stay within scope of practice, if yoga teachers should be trained before they touch their students, why you should always make sure you have permission before you touch someone, and much more.

Enjoy!

Business Lessons from this Episode:

  • Changing the wording from adjustments to assists
  • Use the assist as a way to gently help someone get into a deeper pose
  • Often times peoples bodies don’t fit the same shape that we expect and trying to move it into that isn’t helpful for them
  • Use consent cards to get permission before you touch people
  • Use cues and demos to help people get into the shapes instead of touching them
  • Always ask for permission before you touch someone
  • We never know what someone has gone through in their life and how touch makes them feel. It’s important to respect people’s boundaries if we are going to touch them.
  • Do we need to be trained in massage and touch before we do hands-on assists?
  • There’s a difference between “do this” and “can you do this?”
  • Encourage your students to do assists on themselves, like massaging their feet in butterfly pose
  • Make sure that assists aren’t strenuous for you as the teacher
  • Practice assists on lots of people and get lots of practice
  • If you’re going to touch people, be confident with it
  • And much more… Here’s the episode!
