When you’re designing a product your priorities are going to be creating something useful and easy to use. Once you’ve managed that, it’s time to start trying to sell it. If you’ve created a great product then half the job is done because it will sell on its own merit. But a lot of the time, the initial interest is going to be sparked by the product packaging. It’s the thing that first draws them to the product and makes them grab it off the shelf. It’s also a representation of your brand and if you want to find the repeat customers that you need to sustain your business, creating a strong brand is important. If you haven’t put that much thought into your packaging before, follow these simple rules to get it right.
Simplicity Is Key
The most fundamental function of packaging is to show the customer what they’re buying. If you haven’t managed that, you’ve failed at the first hurdle. That’s why simplicity is so important. If you’ve got a messy design with all sorts of different colours and shapes, covered in loads of text, the customer is going to have to search around for a description of what the product actually is. They’re not going to like that and it’s going to tell them something about your company; it immediately gives them the impression that you don’t know what you’re doing when it comes to design and if you can’t even manage to get the packaging right then how can they trust you to design a good product?
Simplicity is also important because it’s a big design trend at the moment. The most successful branding is all very minimalist and that’s what consumers are responding to most at the moment so you should try to emulate that in your own packaging design.
Bold Colour
When your product is on the shelf in a store (or in an online store), you’re competing with a whole load of other companies and it’s up to you to grab the customer’s attention and make them pick you over everybody else. That’s why it’s got to be colourful so it stands out. Make sure you’re using a good color label printer that prints deep, eye catching colours that customers will spot from across the store. It’s important that you choose the right colours too; different colour combinations will appeal to certain demographics so think about who the audience for your product is when you’re choosing a colour scheme.
Make It Unique
Believe it or not, good packaging can be a great marketing tool in itself. If you create something that catches people’s attention, they’re more likely to share it on social media and generate interest in your products. Even if it’s just a bit of a gimmick, packaging that has multiple functions will really resonate with people online. Recyclability is another big issue that you should consider; if you can create packaging that solves a problem that no other companies have before, you’ll get some good publicity for that too.
Focussing on your product is important, of course, but you have to remember not to neglect the packaging and follow these 3 tips to make it amazing.
