This week on the podcast I am joined by Tess Ball! Tess is a yoga teacher, a former yoga studio owner, and the founder of the Heart Driven Business Academy.
On this episode of the podcast, Tess and I dive into her yoga story, why she decided to become a yoga teacher, what it was like to own a yoga studio from her home, and what it was like to have to close that studio down to move to a new place. We also dive into her business, the Heart Driven Business Academy, and talk about what every yoga teacher and solo-preneur needs to know about their yoga business and where they can find more accessible resources to help them with their business.
Enjoy!
Discussed in this episode:
- Tess’ yoga story, going from corporate advertising to diving into a yoga practice to eventually starting to teach yoga
- How the scientific side of yoga and the human side intertwine
- How going back to work in advertising helped Tess realize that she wanted to work as a yoga teacher
- Why Tess loves teaching yoga in gyms and helping clients there find deeper experiences with yoga (when they may not go in expecting it)
- Deciding to focus on one-on-one classes and how Tess’ experiences teaching group and private lessons shaped her goals and decision to start a small yoga studio (focused on private yoga)
- Not getting stuck thinking that the only way to serve your students is in the traditional studio model
- Step by step on how Tess decided on the pricing for her yoga classes
- Deciding on a price for your services that allows you cover your expenses and feel free to be generous, but not so high that it makes you feel anxious when you go to work
- Moving from Seattle to Bend and the complex feelings that come up from closing down your business and moving to a new city
- The inspiration that drove Tess to create the Heart Driven Business Academy from seeing the challenges and struggles that her peers were having opening and running small businesses
- Working with CPA’s, lawyers, and other professionals to create a comprehensive platform for the learning the most critical areas (roadmap, legal, money, sales, and marketing) to run a business
- Learning how to recognize your strengths, your limits, and where you can ask and receive valuable help

- What are the key things a yoga entrepreneur needs to know when they are starting their business:
- That CPA’s and small business lawyers aren’t scary! They are probably a lot more affordable and a lot easier to access than you think. Consult with both before you start your business to talk about corporate structure, waivers, insurance, other legal documents, and your financial tracking.
- Doing something outside the box is okay! Don’t be afraid if your business doesn’t look like the other businesses in your community. Whether that is a yoga studio or whatever, crunch the numbers, have a system, but let yourself be free to trust your intuition with how you want to serve your customers. You don’t have to create the same thing that everyone is creating in order for it to work and for it to be fulfilling.
- Here is the episode.
