This week on the podcast, I am joined by Selina Rose. Selina is a Registered Holistic Nutritionist, yoga teacher and author. Selina came to yoga while recovering from an eating disorder, and there was something that made her want to keep coming back.
Selina’s work focuses on helping people deal with stress so they can be present, focused and productive in their personal and professional lives, and on this episode, we talk about how to manage stress through natural and holistic means, including holistic nutrition, yoga and breathwork. We talk about how how to manage our stress as yoga teachers, as well as how to help our students with managing their stress.
Enjoy!
- How Selina came to yoga and why she decided to teach yoga
- How Selina integrated yoga with holistic nutrition
- When we take care of our mind and body, we have a better quality of life overall!
- As yoga teachers, it’s important to remember what our first experience at a yoga studio was like so that we can make sure our students feel welcome
- The difference between nutrition and holistic nutrition and why it’s so important to look at holistic nutrition
- What are you doing that makes you happy that isn’t work related?
- There is no shame in not having it all together, even as a yoga teacher
- Sleep is so important and it’s massively underrated! Sleep is one of the biggest ways that we can help our bodies manage stress
- Don’t be too rigid with your diet – don’t be vegetarian or vegan just because you’re a vegetarian. If that feels best for your body, do that, but if it doesn’t, try a different diet or a different way of eating.
- Be mindful when you eat and pay attention to how you feel after you eat. Try and avoid eating things that don’t make you feel good.
- Getting enough water is key for reducing stress!
- Make sure that you give yourself time for proper recovery when you are teaching a lot of yoga
- As women, we need to be flexible with our diets during our monthly cycles and during the cycles of our lives
- For the busy yoga teacher that’s on the go all the time, always make sure that you have a healthy snack on you! Nuts and seeds are a great go-to. Or, anything that is high protein and healthy fats.
- Always leave the house with water!
- Do prep in advance so that it’s easy to run out the house quickly and have food ready to go.
- Cook in bigger batches so that you can put in the effort one time to get a bunch of different meals.
- As yoga teachers, we need to recognize that our clients have a lot going on – they might look peaceful, but they might have a lot going on in their minds
- Use your cueing to help people settle in and relax
- Invite your students to try other classes that might benefit their stress levels and stress management
- When it comes to having a successful 1-on-1 business, keep learning and up-leveling your skills
- When you grow as a practitioner, your clients are able to grow with you too
- Always be talking with your clients to find out what they need and want from you
- Continue to invest in yourself and your business
- Make sure that you surround yourself with awesome people who will help you to grow
- Never assume that people are coming to their mat warmed up – rather, assume that they have been sitting! Building warm ups into classes is a really important practice.
