This week on the podcast I am joined by Stacy Dockins. Stacy is a yoga teacher, studio owner, retreat leader, and the author of Embodied Posture.
Stacy has always been fascinated by the science behind musculoskeletal functionality and physical and mental wellness. She has dedicated over 25 years of her life to studying the human body and teaching yoga and now leads wellness retreats in Texas, Thailand, Bali, and Costa Rica, with her husband, Dave.
Stacy recently developed her first book, Embodied Posture, which empowers readers to align yoga postures to best suit one’s uniqueness. This innovative approach shows teachers and students how to critically approach postural alignment, lending practical information that can be applied immediately to the mat.
In addition to co-owning Yoga Project studios with her husband, Stacy also continues to educate others in mindfulness-based meditation, breath work, and self-inquiry through courses.
On this episode of the podcast, Stacy shares how she has developed a thriving yoga business, tips for leading successful retreats, the process of writing a book, as well as business lessons she’s learned throughout her career.
Enjoy!
- How Stacy went from fitness teacher to yoga teacher
- Going from being a yoga teacher to a studio owner and then building up a studio to more than one location
- You need to learn your own value and be okay with charging money for your services
- Learn how to let people in and work with you – it’s important to bring in other people who can take tasks off your plate!
- What it was like for Stacy to write a book
- Our bodies are unique and different and we need to move away from the idea that every person will look the same in the pose
- We need to train teachers to be critical thinkers about the way that they watch and interact with bodies
- Writers write – people who want to write need to write!
- Writing a book can be a self transformation journey
- Running a successful yoga business isn’t like working at 8-5 – there is always potential for more work all the time
- It takes time to build something like trainings and international retreats – you have to put the time in, do the groundwork, network a ton so that you can get people to come, and be patient as you grow these aspects of your business
- Start with something that is less financially risky when it comes to retreats so that you don’t have to stress as much about sign ups
- Give yourself lots of time with your first few retreats to get registrations
- Be patient when finding your market and your people and selling programs, courses and retreats
- If you keep doing what you love, you will be successful in the long term!
- Make sure that people can get to know you on your retreat page
- Find a niche when it comes to your offerings because there is so much out there – you need to stand out
- As a leader / studio owner, you need to learn to step back and let your teachers / employees shine
- Learning how to communicate and manage emotions is key to a successful business
- You need to trust your gut when it comes to hiring people on your team
- Build a social presence, but focus on being a great yoga teacher! Competency over following!
- Just keep plugging away at your business and it will be hard to go wrong!
- Love being a beginner when you’re a new yoga teacher, and don’t forget that you have lots to offer.
- Keep studying, learning and growing
-
And much more… Here’s the episode!
