This week on the podcast I am joined by Theresa Berenato. Theresa is a corporate yoga teacher and the founder of Workspace Yogi, an online membership site. On this episode, Theresa and I talk about how her path as a yoga teacher has been unconventional in that she hasn’t taught in yoga studios. Instead, she jumped right into teaching corporate yoga classes. She built her clientele up to a point where they requested that she started offering more classes, and instead of filling her schedule more full of corporate classes, she started building her business online. Now, she offers online classes and has a private membership site for her clients.
Theresa breaks down how she was able to build a corporate yoga business and an online yoga business, tips for anyone who is looking to build an online business or membership site, and much more!
Enjoy!
- How Theresa started practicing yoga and what inspired her to become a yoga teacher
- Teacher training is intense – give yourself the time and space to take in the practice and the learnings
- Theresa kick-started her career by teaching in the corporate environment – she’s only taught a few classes in studios throughout her entire career!
- Always network, talk to people and connect with other wellness experts in your community
- Always ask for testimonials from your students – you can add them to your website and also use them to get new classes/clients
- You can get corporate clients by messaging people on LinkedIn
- Theresa’s corporate clients started to ask her where they could practice with her more and that inspired her to start creating videos online
- To build an online business, you need to have a website, email list, free offering, and a YouTube channel
- Theresa’s built her online membership site using Teachable and offering videos and live classes
- When you start out, you can’t compare yourself to other people who have been running online businesses for a while
- Ask for help with the things that you don’t know how to do!
- Hire people to help you if you have the money to do so
- Teachable has a great option for membership sites!
- You can record using a phone and a tripod – it doesn’t need to be fancy – and then you just need a nice space to record in!
- Theresa also bought an iPad and Airpods for recording and editing the videos, but this stuff isn’t necessary to get started
- Trying to use fancy equipment might make it even harder for you to get started – lower your barrier to entry and just start!! It’s better to put something out than to put nothing out.
- When you have an online business, you’ll find that you change things a lot – this is the nature of new businesses where you’re trying something and seeing if it works for you and your students. Be open to changing things if they aren’t working!
- When something isn’t working, don’t give up entirely – just adjust!
- You need to believe in yourself and know that you have something unique to offer
- You have to make what you want a priority and you have to work it into your schedule every single day – being an entrepreneur and creating a business from scratch is hard and you just need to work at it every single day
- Keep your own practice up as you start teaching more and building your yoga business
- Take your self-care very seriously
- Stay connected with community and other yoga teachers
- We need to try new things and step outside of our comfort zones in order to grow!
- Don’t put yourself in a box – explore yourself, your teaching, other teachers, and all the types of yoga
- Don’t get caught up in how many likes or followers you have – that’s not what it’s about
- Stay authentic in yourself and your teaching!
