This week on the podcast, I am joined by Uma Girish. Uma guides spiritually-minded women who are grieving from loss and helps them cope and hold space for grief. The work she does includes the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, illnesses, empty nest, the loss of a dream, and more.
On this episode, Uma and I talk about the importance of giving yourself space when you are grieving a loss, and how to give yourself that space when you teach yoga or own your own business. As a contractor or self-employed individual, it is so hard to take time off, but when we are grieving, we need to give ourselves time and space to heal.
Uma also shares tips for how we can hold space for students that might be grieving and more.
Enjoy!
- How Uma became a grief guide for spiritually-minded women
- How Uma healed from her own grief of losing her mom and turned that into helping others heal
- How can you turn off your emotions and feelings to show up at the workplace? It’s not as easy as just “leaving it at the door”
- Create a sacred space for grief, such as a grief altar. This place should be separate from your other altars or sacred spaces.
- As a yoga teacher, hold space for people grieving by making sure that they feel comfortable and by letting them know that they can be themselves in the class
- When you’re grieving, it’s okay to say “no” to things or to ask permission to reschedule
- We can’t lock our emotions away and pretend like we are doing okay when we aren’t
- Give yourself permission to just be where you are
- We need to get out of the epidemic of positive thinking
- We need to stay out of comparison mode, especially on social media. It’s easy to think that no one else is suffering when we look at other people’s lives online when really that’s not the case.
- The work that Uma had to do on her money story!
- We can’t serve other people when we are not taking care of ourselves
- We need to know the value of what we offer and what we bring to the table
- Do the internal work to connect to your value
- We can’t separate business from the rest of our lives
- Get rid of “should” in your business
