This week on the podcast I am joined by Christine Jaureguiberry! Christine is a yoga teacher with a specialization in yoga for scoliosis, based in the UK.

In this episode we talk about her own yoga journey, what inspired her to become a yoga teacher and how she found her niche in yoga for scoliosis. Christine also shares tips for making our classes more inclusive to students with back pain and/or scoliosis and tips for how we can learn more as yoga teachers.

Christine also shares some of the biggest business lessons she’s learned through her career and her top tips for yoga teachers. Enjoy!

Discussed in this episode:

  • How Christine originally found yoga when she moved from Germany to England
  • Christine’s experience having scoliosis and how yoga helped  her free herself up to move and live with less pain
  • How Christine started teaching yoga and eventually specialized in teaching yoga to help treat scoliosis
  • What is scoliosis and how does it affect the body
  • The difference between functional and structural scoliosis
  • When to say something if it looks like one of your students may have scoliosis
    • Of course, a diagnosis should be left to doctors, but Christine believes that if you are working with children it could be valuable to mention to the parents if you see signs. With adults, Christine does not say anything.
  • Poses that are often valuable and poses to avoid (extreme twists/deep backbends) if you are teaching a student with scoliosis
  • The importance of helping students develop body awareness and not just focusing on mobility
  • Recommendations for how someone with scoliosis can start their yoga journey
    • Making sure to check with your doctor and make sure yoga will be good for your specific case
    • Recommending that students with non-mild scoliosis do a few private one-on-one classes when they are beginning their yoga journey to learn how to adapt to imbalances in their body
  • How yoga teachers can learn more about scoliosis so that they can feel more confident with working with a student with scoliosis
    • Remembering the value that the practice of yoga brings
    • Being mindful of the language around talking about scoliosis (for example “lengthening the spine” vs. “sit with a straight spine”)
  • Being mindful of adjusting students in class when they may have scoliosis or something else that affects their positioning during yoga class
  • Business lessons from Christine’s yoga journey:
    • The importance of asking for and finding help. We often feel like we need to go it alone and have everything figured out for ourselves. But having someone else who can bring a new perspective to your goals, business, and plans is very valuable.
    • Connecting with other health and fitness professionals in your area and helping connect you students to health and fitness beyond yoga if it will help them
    • Embracing and using technology (creating videos, a website, an email list, etc.) and not being afraid to pay for services and investing in your business even if you’re not making a lot of money
  • Christine’s website Yogaberry.net
  • Check out Christine’s YouTube channel and video series on scoliosis
  • Connect with the Yoga for Scoliosis group on Facebook
  • Check out Yoga for Scoliosis book by Elise Browning Miller
